we’ve all seen them, the halo players that never miss, the cod players that shoot you from the other side of the map through 5 buildings, yep, the cheaters.  microsoft has a team of xbox live officials who’s job it is to monitor games for cheaters/hackers and ban the accounts when they are discovered.  well now, the cheaters are fighting back by “swatting” xbox live officials in real life!

in case you are unfamiliar, “swatting” is the act of calling in a fake police report to 911 in order to have police or swat sent to someone’s home with guns drawn.  yes, this is actually happening.  these people aren’t just reporting break-ins or fires, they’re reporting terrorist attacks and russian death squads!  f*ing cheaters!

full story from seattlepi:

disgruntled hackers have been targeting microsoft employees who enforce xbox gaming rules by sending hoax emergency messages to police, saying the employees are under attack at their homes in the middle of the night, according to police records。

a recent incident involved eric neustadter, operations manager for microsoft’s xbox live gaming network and a well-known figure in the gaming community。

early on the morning of aug. 29, the king county sheriff’s office got a 911 call from an operator at at&t’s cell-phone emergency service who had gotten an instant message from a man named “eric。” according to the police report, the message stated: “2 armed russian males broke in and they shot my son. they have claymores outside…my door is barricaded…pls hurry!”

another message came shortly: “they are coming upstairs…pls hurry。”

while on the phone with police dispatch, the at&t operator asked “eric” for a phone number but he replied, “they cut the phone lines,” records show. the sheriff’s office was able to track down the address – neustadter’s home in sammamish – and sent deputies. they also found that neustadter had filed a threat report in january 2010.

more messages streamed in: “kicked the door in。” “now they are trying to break into my room。”

as the deputies were taking up positions outside the home shortly after 4 a.m., another message stated, “please hurry, they have weapons。” around the same time, however, a police operator called the home and eventually got neustadter on the line, records indicate. he assured police everyone was safe and that the emergency messages must be a hoax。

police asked him to come outside. meanwhile, at&t got another message that stated, “there’s a device blinking red on the kitchen table。”

when neustadter went outside he was “momentarily detained,” the report states, until police were sure nobody was hurt。

“he was able to tell us that everyone in the house was alright and that he believed it was a hoax because it had occurred to numerous other microsoft employees in the past,” states the police report, which as provided toseattlepi.com had neustadter’s name redacted。

“after the scene was deemed safe i talked a little more in-depth with xxx,” the deputy’s report states. “he informed me that he is xxx for xbox live operations and one of his primary duties is to head up teams whose job it is to find and shut down hackers who hack the system to locate cheats for xbox and try and sell them. the hackers become extremely upset when this occurs and have been known to retaliate for it。

“xxx told me that similar incidents to tonight’s have occurred to other employees at microsoft”

the king county sheriff’s office said the incident, which was first reported by the sammamish patchonline news site, was an example of what is known as “swatting。” swatting involves a prank call or message to police that is meant to draw a swat team – hence the term – to a false incident。

during the neustadter incident, sheriff’s sgt. john urquhart said, “we figured out was was going on before that was necessary。”

the sheriff’s office sent an informal alert to other local agencies telling them to be aware of hackers targeting xbox live enforcers, urquhart said. the police report says swatting “is a relatively new phenomenon that has grown increasingly popular by hackers。”

xbox spokesman david dennis said “a handful” of microsoft employees have told law enforcement about the situation, and have asked police to call them before dispatching officers to similar incidents。
